Relief of labor pain by ice massage of the hand

Background and aim: Labor pain is an the most pain experience in women and the management of labor pain is one of the main goals of maternity care. Unrelieved labor pain can have an adverse effect which can have a harmful effect on both the mother and the infant.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Hoku point ice massage on pain intensity in primiparous women during labor in hajar hospital of Shahrekord .

Methods . A randomized controlled trial was conducted on sixty primiparous women expected to have a normal childbirth in hajar hospital of Shahrekord were randomly assigned to two equivalent groups (n = 30): ice massage( case) and sand bag group (control ) .First , prior to any kind of intervention, the severity of the base pain (the beginning of the active phase) was measured by means of a Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) in 4 cm dilation. Again ,after two groups had received intervention, the severity of the labor pain in 4,6,8 and 10 cm cervical dilation was measured and was compared. In the case group , Crushed ice was twisted in the terry bag was rocked over the area of the web of skin between the thumb and the forefinger. The massage was carried out in Hoku point throughout three contractions.The sand bag tactile massage in Hoku point was served in the other group .

The data were analyzed using SPSS software and descriptive statistical and Mann- whitney, the paired t test ,x2and independent t.

Results : The result indicated that the severity of the pain In the case group was significantly less than the control group in post intervention ) P<0.001). Also mean duration of active phase in case group was significantly less than the control group ( P<0.05 ) in the case group in4, 6 and 8 cervical dilation there was significant difference between the mean of the pain pre and post intervention( P<0.001 ).

Conclusions : With regard that ice massage is cost-effective nursing intervention that can relief pain during first stage of labor and high satisfaction clients and With regard it is as a non-invasiveness technique ,safe and easy application , We suggest it for relief the labor pain .
